CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s tennis standouts Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) enjoyed success at a pair of United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit events this week.

Elbaba defeated France’s Julie Coin 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 in the first round of the main draw at the $50K Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships in Lexington, Ky. Coin, who is currently ranked No. 231 in the latest World Tennis Association rankings, is a former top 60 player who advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Open. Elbaba was ousted by 149th-ranked Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. Gajdosova is a former top 50 WTA player, who is coming back from an injury.

Nauta advanced to the second round of the $10K Boneshaker Women’s Pro Open in Austin, Texas. Nauta beat USA’s Jayci Goldsmith 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the main draw before losing to Japan’s Yuka Higuchi 7-6(3), 6-2 in the second round. Nauta went 3-0 in qualifying singles, defeating Australia’s Astra Sharma (6-3, 6-4), USA’s Breaunna Addison (6-4, 7-5) and Russia’s Alina Kuzmenkova (6-2, 6-2) to reach the main draw.
