Nine Cavaliers Named to USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Nine members of the Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams were recognized as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its all-academic awards.

In addition to the individual awards, the Virginia women’s team received a USTFCCCA Team All-Academic Award for having a team cumulative grade point average of over 3.00 last year.

“We are proud of these individuals for their hard work on the track and in the classroom,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “Success, both academically and athletically, is something we continually stress in our program. We are glad to see these student-athletes recognized for their hard work in both areas.”

Eight Virginia women were named to the team, including repeat selections Vicky Fouhy (Buckinghamshire, England), Abbey Karin (Byfield, Mass.), Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.) and Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.). Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ontario), Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.), Jen Flack (Alexandria, Va.) and Edy Ndem (Roanoke, Va.) were named to the team for the first time in their career.

On the men’s side, Thomas Porter (Fredericksburg, Va.) was honored for the third consecutive year.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 through at least two semesters at the school and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
