CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Former Virginia outfielder Jarrett Parker was called up Friday (August 1) by the San Francisco Giants. He will be in uniform Friday night for his first major-league game as the Giants play the New York Mets in the start of a four-game series at Citi Field in Flushing, New York.

The native of Stafford, Va., was batting .275 with 12 home runs and 58 RBI in double-A for the Richmond Flying Squirrels at the time of his promotion.

A second-round pick (No. 74 overall) in the 2010 MLB Draft, Parker is the 35th Cavalier to reach the big leagues and the second in the last nine days, as former teammate Chris Taylor made his debut with the Seattle Mariners on July 24. Parker will be the ninth former UVa player to play in Major League Baseball in 2014, a program record for one season, and the third Cavalier to earn his first MLB call-up this year. Kyle Crockett (Cleveland) also made his MLB debut this year.

Former Cavaliers Sean Doolittle (Oakland), Phil Gosselin (Atlanta), Brandon Guyer (Tampa Bay), Javier Lopez (San Francisco), Mark Reynolds (Milwaukee) and Ryan Zimmerman (Washington) also have spent time in Major League Baseball this season.

Parker is the 11th Cavalier to have played under the current coaching staff to reach Major League Baseball (since 2004).

Parker played from 2008-10 for Virginia and was a member of the Cavaliers’ first College World Series team in 2009. In three seasons at UVa, Parker batted .326 with 26 home runs, 214 hits and 137 RBI. He had one of the best seasons in program history in 2009, when he batted .355 with 16 homers, 65 RBI, 76 runs and 20 stolen bases while earning All-America honors.

He holds the school career record with 18 triples and ranks ninth in career home runs, runs (161) and total bases (369). Parker was impressive in the field as well, earning an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award during an error-less campaign in center field in 2010.
