CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Two members of the Virginia swimming and diving family, rising sophomore Leah Smith and Class of 2011 graduate Matt McLean, are set to represent the United States at the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, being held in Gold Coast, Australia, Aug. 21-25.

Preliminaries begin each day at 10 a.m. with finals at 7 p.m. local time in Australia. With the time difference, prelims begin at 8 p.m. Eastern time the previous date and finals are scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. ET on the scheduled date of competition. McLean won the men’s 200m free and placed second in the men’s 400m free at the Philips 66 National Championships in early August to qualify for the squad, while Leah Smith placed third in the women’s 200m free to make the U.S. team.

Smith is entered in three individual events, including the 200m free and 800m free on Thursday and the 400m free on Saturday. McLean is entered in four individual events, including the 200m free (Thursday), 100m free (Friday), 400m free (Saturday) and the 800m free (Sunday). Both Smith and McLean are scheduled to be part of the U.S. 4x200m free relays on Friday.

Nations may have unlimited entries in the preliminary events, but are only allowed two swimmers in each A final, with an addition swimmer in the B final.

McLean won Olympic gold with the United States men’s 4x200m free team in 2012 and was a part of the same relay that earned gold at the 2012 FINA World Short Course Championships and 2013 FINA World Championships.

Smith represented the United States at the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, where she won two gold medals (400m free, 800m free) and was named the Swimmer of the Meet. She was named the ACC Freshman of the Year for 2014 and placed third in the 1,650y free at the NCAA Championships.
