Sept. 7, 2014 Sugar Grove, Ill. – Sporting a lineup of two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior, the 13th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team won its season-opening tournament, finishing first at the 13-team Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The Cavaliers posted the best team score during the final two rounds to pick up the victory.

Virginia finished the 54-hole event at 15-over 879, three shots ahead of Winthrop and Ohio State. UVa shot 2-under 286 during Sunday’s final round.

Sophomore Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) led Virginia during the final round by shooting 2-under 70. He was the Cavaliers’ top finisher, placing seventh at 3-over 219. Stanger collected the third top-10 finish during his career.

“The last 27 holes were about as good as a team can play on that course,” said Virginia coach Bowen Sargent. “They hosted an NCAA regional here last year, so this can be a challenging course. To play that well, with such a young lineup, bodes well for our future.

“I thought we had a chance for a good finish since both Ji and Jimmy had top-10 finishes here last season. Missing Denny (McCarthy) was certainly a question mark, but we held our own. I also thought that Austen Truslow showed why he is considered one of the top freshmen in the nation. He can be a world class player for us.”

Sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) was one shot behind Stanger on the leaderboard, and placed eighth overall at 4-over 220. He shot 1-under 71 during Sunday’s play, the same score as senior teammate Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.). Park was 11th at 6-over 222.

Two freshmen made their collegiate debuts for UVa during the tournament. Austen Truslow (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) was 17th overall at 223 and Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) was 30th at 228. Walker shot 74 during the final round while Truslow finished with a 75.

The win was the 15th by the Cavaliers during Bowen Sargent’s 11-year tenure at Virginia.

Last season Virginia was the runner-up at the tournament. The Cavaliers played the Northern Intercollegiate without senior All-American Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.), who is currently in Japan preparing to play for Team USA at the World Amateur Team Championships.

Winthrop’s Zach Seabolt led the tournament from wire-to-wire to capture medalist honors at 4-under 212.

Virginia returns to action Sept. 19-21 at the Dick’s Sporting Goods ACC/SEC Challenge that will be contested at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville.
