Sept. 19, 2014 Nashville, Tenn. – The Virginia men’s golf team is in third place after the first 36 holes of play at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Challenge Cup taking place at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville. The Cavaliers shot even par 568, carding an opening round score of 2-over 286 and shooting 2-under 282 in the afternoon.

Georgia Tech leads the 12-team field at 6-under 562 while Vanderbilt is second at 564.

UVa was led by sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), who posted back-to-back scores of 70, to finish the day in eighth place at 140. Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) is in 13th place at 142 after firing rounds of 71. It is McCarthy’s first collegiate event of the season after missing UVa’s first tournament while helping Team USA to the World Amateur Team Championship title.

Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) is in 20th place at 144 with scores of 73 and 71. Austen Truslow (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) is 33rd at 148 with rounds of 78 and 70 and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) is in 44th place at 151 with scores of 72 and 79.

Stroke play will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. with teams starting in order of Friday’s scoring. The Conference Challenge will take place on Sunday, with teams from the ACC playing 18-hole matches against their similarly ranked opponent from the SEC. The conference that accumulates the most points on Sunday will be crowned the 2014 Collegiate Challenge Cup Champion.
