WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Virginia newcomers Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) and Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) defeated No. 55 Welma Luus and Natiliya Bredikhina of Maryland to highlight Friday (Sept. 19) women’s tennis action at the Tribe Invitational.

Morton and Mercer posted an 8-6 win over the Luus and Bredikhina and added an 8-7(4) win over Wake Forest’s Kasey Gardiner and Luisa Fernandez to start the tournament 2-0.

In other doubles action, UVa junior Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and sophomore Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) went 1-1. Epstein and Faure dropped an 8-7(4) decision to Maryland’s Alexandra Stanova and Olivia Gaudreault, but defeated Wake Forest’s Samantha Asch and Xue Zhang 8-5.

The Cavaliers went 3-1 in singles, gaining victories from Morton, Epstein and Faure. Morton defeated Indiana’s Katie Klyczek 6-3, 6-4 and Epstein beat Marshall’s Marija Bogicevic 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Faure added a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Marshall’s Maddie Silver. Mercer suffered a 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 loss to Indiana’s Alecia Kauss.

The Cavaliers are competing in singles and doubles against players from Dartmouth, Indiana, Marshall, Maryland, Penn, VCU, Wake Forest and host William & Mary in the three-day invitational. The action is taking place at three facilities – the Millie West Tennis Facility, Commons Courts and the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center – and begins each day at 9:15 a.m.
