Cavalier Men's Golfers Finish Third at Challenge Cup

Sept. 20, 2014 Nashville, Tenn. – The Virginia men’s golf team finished the stroke play portion of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Challenge Cup in third place in the team’s second tournament of the season. The Cavaliers shot 1-over 285 during Saturday’s final round for a 54-hole total of 1-over 853. Georgia Tech took top honors at 848 while host Vanderbilt was second at 849. The tournament was played at The Golf Club of Tennessee

UVa was led by sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), who finished fourth overall at 4-under 209. He posted a final round score of 2-under 69. It was the fourth top-10 finish for Bard during his career.

Senior All-American Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) turned in an 11th-place finish in his first event of the season. He shot even par 213, posting even par scores of 71 during every round.

Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) was 14th overall at 2-over 215. He shot 71 during Saturday’s play. Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) was 42nd at 225 and Austen Truslow (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) was 46th at 227.

Georgia’s Lee McCoy took medalist honors at 8-under 205.

The Conference Challenge portion of the tournament will take place on Sunday, with teams from the ACC playing 18-hole matches against their similarly ranked opponent from the SEC. The conference that accumulates the most points on Sunday will be crowned the 2014 Collegiate Challenge Cup Champion.
