CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Blue team took a 1-0 advantage in the Orange & Blue World Series with a 12-0 thumping of the Orange squad in Game 1, held Tuesday evening at Davenport Field. The Blue team racked up 15 hits, while Connor Jones (So., Chesapeake, Va.) struck out 10 batters over five scoreless innings on the mound.
Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.), Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) and Justin Novak (Fr., Tokyo, Japan) each had three hits and scored three runs for the Blue. Haseley also stole three bases. Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) drove in three runs for the Blue.
The Orange team was limited to five hits, with two coming from Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.).
Jones earned the win for the Blue, allowing just two hits and a walk while fanning 10 over five innings. Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) fired three scoreless innings before Matthew Doughty (Fr., Roanoke, Va.) tossed a scoreless ninth to wrap up the shutout.
Jack Roberts (R-Fr., Richmond, Va.) took the loss for the Orange after allowing three earned runs, four hits and three hits over four innings.
The Blue scored in six of the nine innings, blowing the game open in a four-run fifth inning which was highlighted by a two-run double from Coman. The four-run frame gave the Blue a 7-0 edge.
The Blue scored runs in each of the final three innings to stretch the lead.
With the roster split in half, the teams used modified batting orders, featuring just seven batters.
Game 2 of the series is slated for 6 p.m. Friday.
The seven games will be broken up into two three-game series (Games 1-3 and Games 4-6 are separate series) as well as a stand-alone Game 7. If a given team wins the first two games of either series, the third game of that series will be played based on run differential of the first two games to allow the trailing team a chance to still win the series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running up the score.
There is no admission charge for any of Virginia’s exhibition games or Orange and Blue World Series contests. Free parking will be available in the University Hall lot. Fans should plan to enter Davenport Field for all fall games along the first-base line and not the main gate. The best route to reach this entrance is by using the road adjacent to the Lannigan Field track complex.
