PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Virginia junior Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) begins main draw singles competition on Thursday (Oct. 2) at the 2014 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

No. 4 seed Elbaba battles Florida’s Brooke Austin in the opening round of 32. Reigning NCAA singles champion Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was forced to withdraw from the main draw singles competition due to a minor setback with wrist tendinitis.

In addition, Elbaba and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) advanced to the main draw in doubles after earning a lucky loser spot as the highest seeded doubles team to lose in the final qualification round. No. 22 Elbaba and Nauta defeated Texas A&M’s Saska Gavriloska and former Cavalier Rachel Pierson 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16, but earned the spot despite losing to No. 32 Ohio State’s Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus 7-6(6), 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Elbaba and Nauta battle Maryland’s Welma Luus and Nataliya Bredikhina in the main draw round of 32 on Thursday. Luus and Bredikhina are ranked No. 55.

Singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, NY.
