CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia softball head coach Blake Miller announced the Cavaliers’ 2015 schedule Thursday (Oct. 2). UVa is set to host 22 games at The Park, which are free to the public.
The Cavaliers will play at least nine teams that competed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, including ACC-Champion Florida State (which advanced to the Women’s College World Series), BYU, James Madison, Louisville, NC State, Notre Dame, Utah Valley, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
UVa will also play at least four opponents for the first time, including Marist, Utah Valley, UTEP and Western Carolina.
Virginia begins on the road for three tournaments, including the Kajikawa Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., where UVa opens the season on Feb. 5, taking on BYU. The Cavaliers will also travel to a tournament at NC Central (Feb. 13-15) and the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla. (Feb. 20-22). Opponents and times for the last two tournaments will be announced at a later date.
“Our 2015 schedule has a nice balance, playing teams from all regions of the country, which will help us as we drive towards ACC play,” Miller said. “The different tournaments we are attending will provide a good picture of where we are and will test us before we get to conference play.
UVa will host five ACC opponents, including Pittsburgh (Feb. 28-March 1), Georgia Tech (March 7-8), Boston College (April 3-4) and Virginia Tech (April 8). NC State comes to Charlottesville for the final UVa home weekend series April 11-12.
Virginia goes on the road for conference series against ACC newcomer Louisville (March 14-15), North Carolina (March 28-29), Florida State (April 18-19) and the final regular season series at Syracuse (April 25-26). Last season, Virginia pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in school history, defeating then-No. 9 Florida State, 11-9, after being down 8-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.
UVa does not face Notre Dame during the conference schedule this season.
Additionally, the Cavaliers will host a home tournament against Delaware State and Marist March 21-22 and will host non-conference matchups against George Washington (March 25), Western Carolina (March 31) and Longwood (April 15).
The 2015 ACC Softball Championship will be hosted by Virginia Tech May 7-9 in Blacksburg, Va.
Virginia welcomes eight newcomers to the squad and returns eight letterwinners from the 2014 team that went 8-43.
