Virginia Drops Three-Set Match to No. 25 Duke, 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Virginia volleyball team fell to No. 25 Duke, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18, Friday evening (Oct. 3) before a capacity crowd at Memorial Gymnasium. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 9-7 (2-1 ACC), while the Blue Devils improved to 11-3 (3-0 ACC).
For the match, the Blue Devils led the Cavaliers in hitting percentage, 301-.182, and had 55 digs compared to UVa’s 31.
Senior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) and sophomore Jasmine Burton (West Hills, Calif.) each had 10 kills to lead Virginia.
In a tight first set that saw nine ties and five lead changes, Duke won the final two points of the frame on a block by Emily Sklar and a Virginia hitting error.
In the second set, Virginia hit only .139 to Duke’s .344, as the Blue Devils went on to win, 25-18.
The Blue Devils hit .414 with 16 kills and claimed the third set, 25-18.
Jordan Tucker hit .667 with 12 kills to lead the Blue Devils.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday when they face Louisville at 5 p.m. Fans can bring their UVa-Pitt football tickets to gain free admission (based on availability).
