Oct. 18, 2014 Alpharetta, Ga. – The 25th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team dropped back to second place at the U.S. Collegiate Championship following Saturday’s second round. After shooting 16-under 272 on Friday, the Cavaliers posted a second-round score of 7-over 295. Heading into Sunday’s final round UVa trails ninth-ranked Texas by one shot. The Longhorns lead the Hoos 566 to 567. Texas A&M is in third place at 6-under 570.

Virginia senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) and sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) remain in first and second place, respectively. After opening with a 9-under 63, McCarthy shot even par 72 Saturday for a 36-hole total of 9-under 135. Bard is two shots behind him at 137. He posted a score of 1-under 71 during the second round.

UVa freshman Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is in 42nd place at 3-over 147. He shot 75 Saturday. Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) is 50th at 148 and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) is 71st at 9-over 153. Both players shot 77 during the second round.

The final round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship will take place Sunday. Paired with Texas and Texas A&M, the Cavaliers will tee off starting at 10:10 a.m. The 15-team field includes 11 teams ranked in the top-30 of the current Golfweek poll. Live scoring of the event is online at
