FLUSHING, N.Y. – Three Virginia women’s singles players advanced to the round of 16 to highlight Thursday (Nov. 6) action at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Juniors Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) each posted wins in the opening round of 32 to advance to the round of 16 on Friday.

Sixth-seeded Elbaba defeated Cal’s Zsofi Susanyi 6-2, 6-4 and seventh-seeded Collins beat Vanderbilt’s Sydney Campbell 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Nauta completed the perfect singles day for UVa with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Julia Jones of Ole Miss.

In the round of 16 tomorrow, Elbaba meets Pepperdine’s Lorraine Guillermo and Collins battles Cal’s Lynn Chi. Nauta faces Rice’s Natalie Beazant, who upset third-seeded Hayley Carter of North Carolina. The Collins-Chi match is a re-match of the 2014 NCAA singles final, which Collins won 6-2, 7-5 to claim the title.

In doubles action, junior transfer Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) were eliminated in the opening round of 32. Mercer and Morton lost 6-1, 6-4 to Oklahoma State’s Kelsey Laurente and Viktoriya Lushkova.
