CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia wrestling team stands in seventh place after the first day of competition Thursday at the 2015 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. Virginia scored 31 points in the first day of action.

The tournament concludes Friday, beginning with the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Flowrestling will provide live video of each match as a part of its FloPro subscription. Free live scoring is available through Trackwrestling. Links to both are located on VirginiaSports.com.

Three Cavaliers went unbeaten Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals – George DiCamillo (R-So., Highland Heights, Ohio) at 133 pounds, Nick Sulzer (R-Sr., Cleveland, Ohio) at 165 and Zach Nye (R-Jr., Enola, Pa.) at 197.

Virginia started the day with 15 competitors – 11 remain alive heading into the second day on Friday, including eight in the wrestlebacks.

Ranked No. 10 nationally, DiCamillo won all three of his Thursday bouts. He started the day with a tech fall against Cleveland State’s Dan King (22-6) before scoring a 12-7 decision over Campbell’s Drew Walker. He moved into the quarters with a 6-3 win over Nick Zanetta of Pitt. DiCamillo will face fifth-ranked Jimmy Gulibon of Penn State in the quarterfinals.

The No. 2-ranked wrestler nationally at 165, Sulzer cruised to a pair of major decisions Thursday. He opened with an 18-6 major over George Mason’s Ryan Forrest before downing Pitt’s Cody Wiercioch, 16-3. Sulzer will wrestle Army’s Chandler Smith in the quarters.

Ranked No. 16 nationally, Nye rolled to the quarterfinals with a trio of wins – a pin against Cleveland State’s Kanez Omar, a 9-0 major decision over Appalachian State’s Tyler Radford and a 8-5 triumph over No. 19 Shane Woods of Wyoming. Nye will wrestle reigning national champion J’den Cox of Missouri in the quarterfinals.

Virginia also has wrestlers left in the consolation bracket at six of the remaining seven weight classes – Will Mason (R-So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Nick Herrmann (Jr., Amarillo, Texas) at 125, Joe Spisak (R-Sr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) at 141, Gus Sako (R-Sr., Cleveland, Ohio) at 149, James Suvak (R-So., Parma Heights, Ohio) and Tyler Askey (R-Fr., Newnan, Ga.) at 184 and Ethan Hayes (R-Jr., New Lebanon, Ohio) and Collin Campbell (R-Sr., Roxboro, N.C.) at heavyweight. Herrmann is competing unattached.
