Cavaliers Conclude Season-Opening Meet at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track & field teams concluded their opening meet of the indoor season as competition wrapped up Saturday at the Virginia Tech Invitational at the Rector Field House. After a strong start to the meet on Friday, the Cavaliers added several more quality performances Saturday as select field event and multi-event athletes were in action.
“Productive day for the group overall, considering this was the first competition of the year,” said assistant coach Mario Wilson. “We had quite a few lifetime bests, which is a great way to start a season. There were a lot of positives we saw at this meet, both last night and today.”
On Saturday, sophomore Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) won the women’s shot competition with a PR of 50′ 0.25″, moving her into sixth place on the Virginia all-time list. Fellow sophomore Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario), who set the school record in the men’s weight throw yesterday, was second in the men’s shot put with a mark of 57′ 0″, the fourth-best indoor performance in school history.
Virginia had three strong performances in the women’s pole vault. First-year Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) cleared 11′ 10.75″, a UVa freshman record and the third-best mark in school history. Senior Sarah DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.) and freshman Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) both cleared 11′ 5″, the seventh-best mark in school history.
In the men’s long jump, senior Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) tied his indoor PR with a mark of 23′ 4″. Sophomore Chris Rogers (Midlothian. Va.) also had an indoor PR with a mark of 22′ 6.5″.
Virginia will return to action next week (Jan. 23-24) with the Rod McCravy Meet in Lexington, Ky.
