CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 6 Virginia opened the 2015 dual season with a 6-1 win over in-state rival VCU on Sunday (Jan. 18) at Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia won the doubles point and five of six singles matches to post the win.

The Cavaliers swept doubles with identical 6-1 scores on all three courts. No. 22 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) defeated Cindy Chala and Darya Berezhnaya 6-1 on court two. No. 11 Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) and Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) clinched the team point with a 6-1 win over Salome Kvitashvili and Olga Barscheuskaya on court one. UVa’s Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) added a 6-1 win over Ana Batiri and Alzbeta Veverkova on court three.

In singles, No. 1 Elbaba gave Virginia a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kvitashvili on court one. Mercer made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Batiri on court five and Morton clinched the team victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Barscheuskaya on court three.

Faure added a 6-2, 6-4 win over Veverkova on court six before VCU got on the scoreboard with Chala’s 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win over No. 16 Nauta on court two. Epstein closed out the scoring with a three-set win over Berezhnaya on court four.

Virginia hosts Utah on Thursday, Jan. 22. First serve at Boar’s Head Sports Club is set for 4 p.m.
