CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis program announced Monday (Jan. 19) that junior Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) has been named captain for the 2015 dual season.

Nauta, who served as a tri-captain with Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Caryssa Peretz last season, was named Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Cavaliers after helping the team to their first ACC regular season and tournament championships. In addition, the Cavaliers won a school-best 24 matches and made their first NCAA quarterfinal appearance.

In 2014, Nauta was named All-ACC for the second straight season after posting a team leading 33-8 singles record, including an 11-1 mark in league play. Nauta clinched Virginia’s first ACC Championship title with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) win over Duke’s Hanna Mar and participated in the NCAA Singles Championship.

“We are very happy to name Stephanie team captain for the 2015 season,” Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Stephanie is a hard worker and a very caring teammate, and team leader. She possesses great accountability as an individual, while also working within the team in a completely unselfish manner. Along with Stephanie, the entire team is showing itself to be a motivated, determined and enthusiastic group. Stephanie’s leadership role will be enhanced by the overall strength and character of this team and each of her teammates. We are excited to work together to make this a great dual match season and are fortunate and proud to have Stephanie help lead the way.”

Nauta, who captured the USTA/ITA Atlantic Region singles title in October, is currently ranked No. 16 in the latest ITA singles rankings. Nauta is ranked No. 22 in doubles with Elbaba.

No. 6 Virginia (1-0) returns to dual action against No. 44 Utah on Thursday, Jan. 22. First serve at Boar’s Head Sports Club is set for 4 p.m.
