CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Short-handed Virginia rallied past No. 42 Utah, 4-3, on Thursday (Jan. 22) at Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The fifth-ranked Cavaliers, who played with five available players for the match due to the flu, rallied from a 3-0 deficit to improve to 2-0. The Utes fell to 0-1.

Trailing 3-0 in the match, No. 16 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) started Virginia’s rally with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 100 Tereza Bekerova on court one. Freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa on court four. Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) evened the score at 3-3 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sarah Richter on court two and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) capped the comeback and clinched the win with a 7-6, 7-6 win on court three.

The Utes claimed the doubles point with a forfeit on court three and a win on court one. Nauta and Epstein defeated Richter and Gerstner Da Rosa 6-3 on court two, but Utah’s Bekerova and Margo Pletcher clinched the point with a 7-5 win over No. 11 Mercer and Morton on court one.

Utah led 2-0 after Virginia forfeited at No. 6 singles and went up 3-0 after Alexia Petrovic’s 6-3, 6-3 win over Taylor Wingo (Newport News, Va.) on court five.
