Orlando, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team opens the spring portion of its schedule Sunday at the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. The 18-team field features 16 teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament last year. The 54-hole event runs through Tuesday.

The field for this year’s tournament includes Texas, Iowa State, Texas State, Rollins, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Florida, Campbell, East Carolina, Tulane, Kentucky, UCF, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Western Carolina, Miami and SMU.

Virginia’s lineup will feature Maho Hayakawa, Lauren Coughlin, Briana Mao, Elizabeth Szokol and Lauren Diaz-Yi. Alex Hershberger will compete as a non-scoring individual. During the first round, the Cavaliers tee off starting at 9:15 a.m. and are paired with UCF and Vanderbilt.

UCF won last year’s event at 7-under 857 as the Golden Knights Fanny Cnops took medalist honors at 8-under 208.

UVa last played in the tournament in 2013 when Briana Mao took medalist honors at 4-under 214. The Cavaliers were fifth in the final team standings at 15-over 879.

Diaz-Yi led UVa in the fall with a 72.08 stroke average after four tournaments. She took top honors at the Tar Heel Invitational. Szokol, a transfer from Northwestern, was second on the team at 73.42 while Mao finished the fall at 73.50.
