Lihu’e, Kaua’i, Hawaii – The 17th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team is in fifth place after the opening round at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Kaua’i, Hawaii. The Cavaliers shot 3-over 291 during their first spring tournament. California leads the 17-team field after shooting 6-under 282.

Senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) and freshman Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) led the Cavaliers with identical scores of 1-under 71. They are tied for eighth place after the opening round.

Sophomore Derek Bark (New Hartford, N.Y.) is in 32nd place at 74 while senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) is 39th at 75. Freshman Jimmy Stanger rounded out the UVa scoring in 52nd place with a 4-over 76.

California’s Shotaro Ban leads the field after carding a round of 5-under 67.

The 54-hole tournament at Wailua Golf Course runs through Friday.
