ORLANDO, Fla.-The Virginia softball team rallied in both games at the Citrus Classic Saturday (Feb. 21), but fell to George Washington, 16-9 in 10 innings, and to Arkansas, 6-5.

Against the Razorbacks (7-7), the Cavaliers (3-10) were down 4-0 going to the sixth inning, but responded with four of their own to tie the game. Freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) hit a two-run double and sophomore Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) launched a two-run home run to knot the score, but Arkansas came back with two of its own and went on to win, 6-5.

Freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) threw a complete game, allowing six runs with five strikeouts, but fell to 3-4. Sydney Wright had the complete-game win for the Razorbacks, striking out eight in seven innings.

The Cavaliers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, but George Washington captured the win, 16-9, after hitting two home runs in the 10th frame.

Down 5-2 in the seventh with two outs, sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) doubled to clear the bases and score senior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.), sophomore McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.) and Davis. It was Fitzgerald’s first extra-base hit this season after earning 15 singles.

Both teams scored a run in the eighth and two in the ninth, but the Colonials struck for eight in the 10th, including a grand slam by Morgan Matetic.

GW’s Paige Kovalsky (2-0) picked up the win, allowing nine runs (five earned) in a complete-game 10 innings. Freshman Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) fell to 0-4 on the season, allowing 16 runs (10 earned) in a season-high 9.0 innings.

The Cavaliers conclude the Citrus Classic Sunday (Feb. 22) with games against Campbell at 10 a.m. and Elon at 12:15 p.m.
