Aiken, S.C. – The No. 19 Virginia men’s golf team finished third at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invite in Aiken, S.C., in the first of two spring break week tournaments. The Cavaliers shot even par 280 during Tuesday’s final round for a 54-hole total of 8-under 832. South Carolina, ranked No. 8, won the tournament by one stroke over Clemson. The Gamecocks finished at 15-under 825.

Freshman Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) was Virginia’s top finisher, tying for fourth at 6-under 204. He shot even par 70 during the final round. It was Walker’s best finish as a collegiate. His second round 6-under 64 was his lowest score this year and the second best by a Cavalier this season.

Senior All-American Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) shot 2-over 72 during the final round to place 11th overall at 4-under 206. UVa sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) posted UVa’s best final round totals, shooting 1-under 69. Bard placed 21st at even par 210 and Park was 31st at 214.

Sophomore Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was 42nd at 216. He recorded a 3-over 73 for his final 18 holes.

South Carolina’s Will Starke took medalist honors at 9-under 201.

The Cavaliers head to Florida for the second event this week. They will compete at Florida State’s Seminole Intercollegiate March 13-15.
