CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia softball team came from behind to defeat Delaware State, 8-7, and Marist, 9-8, Saturday (March 21) as part of a round-robin tournament at The Park.

The Cavaliers (7-25) came from 7-1 down to DSU (5-14) to win 8-7. Sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) went 4-for-4 and freshman Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Virginia scored at least once in every frame from the third inning on.

Virginia took the lead in the sixth inning on a sophomore McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.) sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) and a double by Ingraham that scored Fitzgerald.

After falling behind, 6-1 in the second inning, junior Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) made her first appearance of the season in the circle and shut down the Hornets, allowing one run in five innings to earn the win (1-0).

Jessica Shalongo (2-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in an inning of relief.

In the second game, Virginia fell behind 3-0, but a six-run fourth inning gave them the lead before holding on for a 9-8 win over Marist (8-13). Fitzgerald was 2-for-4 with 4 more RBI and seven Cavaliers scored runs in the contest.

The Red Foxes attempted to rally in the seventh down 9-4, but after allowing four runs in, freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) induced a line drive double play to end the game and earn the win (5-13).

The Cavaliers conclude the tournament Sunday (March 22) with a single game against Marist at noon at The Park. Admission is free of charge.
