Awendaw, S.C. – The No. 22 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for sixth place following the opening round of play at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 2-under 286 and are tied with Duke, nine shots behind tournament leader Missouri.

Sophomore Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) both shot 1-under 71 during the first round to lead the Cavaliers. They are tied for 15th place.

UVa senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) and sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) are tied for 26th place after shooting even par 72. Freshman Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) finished the round in 72nd place after shooting 81.

Four players share the lead after completing the first round at 5-under 67. The 54-hole tournament runs through Tuesday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
