Jordan Young Breaks School Hammer Throw Record

BERKELEY, Calif. – Sophomore Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) broke the school record in the men’s hammer throw as the Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams began competition Friday at a pair of events in the Bay Area. The tri-meet between the Cavaliers and Cal and Michigan began in Berkeley, while Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) ran the 10000m at the Stanford Invitational on Friday night.

The men’s and women’s hammer throws were the only events of the tri-meet on Friday. Young won the men’s competition with a throw of 67.15m (220′ 3″), breaking the previous school record by nearly three meters. First-year James Williams (Radford, Va.) was sixth with a PR of 44.35m (145′ 6″).

“We had a solid competition today,” said assistant coach Martin Maric. “Jordan is in a period of transition from indoor weight throw to outdoor hammer throw, which takes a few weeks. This result reflects on his good technical work in practice over the last two weeks, but the best results for Jordan in the hammer are yet to come.”

In the women’s hammer throw, sophomore Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) had a PR of 47.23m (154′ 11″) to finish third. First-year Carter Green (Ashland, Pa.) was sixth with a PR of 35.83m (117′ 7″).

The day concluded for the Cavaliers with Herriott racing against an elite field in the men’s 10000m at the Stanford Invitational. Herriott ran a PR of 29:08.17, the third-fastest time in school history.

The remainder of the Cal-Michigan-Virginia tri-meet will be held Saturday at Edwards Stadium on Cal’s campus. Events begin at 11:30 a.m. PT.
