CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 2 North Carolina defeated No. 12 Virginia 4-3 in ACC women’s tennis action on Friday (April 10) at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Junior captain Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), freshman Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) and Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) each recorded singles wins in the loss for Virginia (15-5, 8-3 ACC).
North Carolina claimed the doubles point and three singles wins to remain unbeaten at 24-0 and 12-O in the ACC.
The Tar Heels recorded the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 2. No. 49 Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle defeated Nauta and Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) 8-3 on court three. North Carolina clinched the point on court two as No. 7 Caroline Price and Jamie Loeb downed Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Mercer 8-4 on court two.
In singles, No. 36 Nauta tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 19 Price on court three. North Carolina then recorded three straight wins to gain the team win. No. 6 Loeb defeated No. 2 Elbaba 6-3, 6-1 on court one. No. 93 Whitney Kay followed with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 win over Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) on court four. Cassandra Vazquez clinched the Tar Heel win with a 6-3, 7-6 decision over Faure on court six. Mercer beat No. 120 Vialle 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 on court five and No. 37 Collins added a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 14 Hayley Carter on court two.
Virginia plays at No. 36 Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 12. First is set for 12 p.m.
