Virginia to Host NCAA Men's & Women's Tennis Regionals
April 28, 2015
CHARLOTTESVILLE – For the sixth consecutive year, both the Virginia men’s and women’s tennis teams will host NCAA Tournament first and second round play at Snyder Tennis Center. The men’s regional will be Friday-Saturday, May 8-9, while the women’s regional is set for Saturday-Sunday, May 9-10.
In the men’s tournament, Virginia will host St. John’s in the first round, while Minnesota plays Princeton in the other first round match in Charlottesville.
In the women’s tournament, the Cavaliers will play VCU in the first round, with South Carolina meeting Princeton in the other first round match. The first round winners play the following day for a trip to the NCAA Round of 16, hosted this year by Baylor in Waco, Texas.
The Cavalier men (23-3) are the tournament’s No. 3 overall seed, marking the ninth consecutive year they have been a top-four national seed. Virginia won its ninth consecutive ACC Championship this season and enters the tournament on a 14-match winning streak. It marks the 12th consecutive year that Virginia has received a seed and hosted a regional. The Cavaliers are the only team to be a top-eight seed in the tournament in each of the past 12 seasons. Virginia, who has played in three of the last four NCAA finals, has reached the quarterfinals 10 straight seasons and made semifinal appearances in seven of the past eight years.
The Cavalier women (21-5) earned a No. 9 overall seed, after winning their second consecutive ACC Championship last week. Virginia enters the tournament on a six-match winning streak, with five of the six wins against NCAA Tournament teams. The Cavaliers, a national seed for the fifth consecutive year, advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in school history last year. This season marks the school-record seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance by the Cavaliers.
