St. George, Utah – The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s golf team moved up to fifth place after the second round of play at the NCAA Regional in St. George, Utah. The Cavaliers shot 12-over 296 on Friday for a two-day total of 36-over 604. UVa’s performance was 12 strokes better than its opening round effort.

Top-ranked USC leads the 18-team field at 17-over 585. Stanford is second at 596 followed by California and Arkansas at 602. UNLV is one shot behind Virginia at 605.

Following Saturday’s final round, the top six teams from the three-day, 54-hole tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships. Three teams are tied for seventh place, seven shots behind the Hoos.

Virginia was led during the second round by sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) who shot 1-over 72 at the par-71 Entrada at Snow Canyon course. She opened play by carding a 12-over 83. Diaz-Yi is in 42nd place after 36 holes at 14-over 155.

Juniors Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) both shot 73 Friday. Coughlin is in sixth place at 147 while Szokol is 15th at 149. Senior Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.) shot 78 and dropped back to 29th at 153. Freshman Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.) is in 81st place at 161. She also shot 78 during the second round.

UVa is making its 11th straight appearance at an NCAA Regional. The Cavaliers are looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the eighth time in the program’s 12-year history.

The NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 22-27 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.

UVa will tee off from the first tee at 8:54 a.m. MT in the third round while paired with Arkansas and UNLV. Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com.
