Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. – The No. 27 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for fifth place after the opening round of the NCAA Regional at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. The Cavaliers opened play at the 54-hole tournament by shooting 9-over 297. Oklahoma leads the field at 4-under 284. The 14th-ranked Sooners are followed on the leaderboard by East Tennessee State (289), Wichita State (292) and St. Mary’s (295). San Diego is tied with the Cavaliers.

The top five teams from the regional site will advance to the NCAA Championships. UVa enters the event as the No. 5 seed.

Senior All-American Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) led Virginia during the opening round by shooting even par 72. Sophomores Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) are tied for 21st place at 2-over 74. Junior Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) shot 77 and senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) ended the round in 64th place at 80.

The tournament continues Friday and Saturday. UVa will be paired with St. Mary’s and San Diego during the second round and will tee off starting at 8:20 a.m. PT from the first tee. Live scoring is online at
