CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia assistant wrestling coach Keith Gavin took runner-up honors at the 2015 U.S. Wrestling Open on Saturday (May 9) at South Point Arena in Las Vegas. Gavin placed second at 86 kg/189 pounds in the freestyle finals.

By virtue of his second-place finish at the U.S. Open, Gavin qualified for the U.S. World Team Trials, which will be held June 12-14 at Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. Gavin was the runner-up at the 2010 and 2014 U.S. World Team Trials and placed third at the 2011 World Team Trials.

Gavin picked up a 4-1 win over Jon Reader in the quarterfinals before scoring an 8-4 decision over Deron Winn in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Gavin dropped a 5-2 decision to Jake Herbert.

Gavin just completed his first season as an assistant coach at Virginia.
