CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia men’s tennis player Ryan Shane and women’s tennis player Julia Elbaba were among the seven players named to the 2015 USTA Collegiate National Team, the United States Tennis Association announced Tuesday. The high-level training program is designed to help America’s premier college players assimilate to professional tennis in a team-oriented environment.

The program began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA. It is designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the summer months. Collegiate coaches will accompany the players as they compete at events around the country over the upcoming weeks.

Shane, a rising senior on the men’s team, is participating in the program for the first time. Last month he won the NCAA Singles Championship and ended the season ranked No. 2 nationally in the ITA singles rankings. He also helped the Cavaliers win their second NCAA Championship in the past three seasons.

Elbaba, a rising senior on the women’s team, was named to the team for the third consecutive year. She won the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate singles title last fall and ended 2014-15 ranked No. 5 in the ITA singles rankings. She also led Virginia to its second consecutive ACC Championship.

This year’s team was open to rising freshmen through rising seniors who met at least one of the following criteria: NCAA singles champion; highest-ranked American in the ITA final singles rankings; ITA Rookie of the Year; ITA All-American singles champion; USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships singles champion; pro ranking inside the Top 600 (men) or Top 400 (women) from September through April.
