Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia’s Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) and Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) have been named to the 2015 VaSID All-State University Division Men’s Golf team and head coach Bowen Sargent was honored again as the organization’s coach of the year.

McCarthy, a senior, led UVa with a 70.94 stroke average and become the first player in Virginia history to earn All-ACC honors four times during their career. He had five top-10 outings and topped the Cavaliers at the NCAA Championships with a 29th-place finish.

Bard, a sophomore, was second on the team with a 71.45 stroke average and also picked up All-ACC honors. He won the U.S. Collegiate title and had five total top-10 finishes during the season.

Sargent claimed his fourth career VaSID Coach of the Year honor, as he was also named the award winner in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He led the Cavaliers to an 18th-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship and a No. 25 ranking in the final Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll.

Virginia posted top five tournament finishes in 10 out of 13 tournaments during the 2014-15 season, including a win at the Northern Intercollegiate and a runner-up finish at the U.S. Collegiate.

A total of eight University Division programs in Virginia were represented on the 2015 VaSID All-State University Division Men’s Golf first and second teams. Liberty, Virginia and Virginia Tech each had multiple selections on the all-state listings. VCU junior Brad Ball, the Atlantic 10 Conference champion, was named the 2015 VaSID Men’s Golfer of the Year, while Liberty’s Isaiah Logue was tabbed the 2015 VaSID Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year.
