CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The second-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team opened its 2015 exhibition schedule Saturday evening by defeating Navy, 1-0, at Klöckner Stadium. Freshman Malcolm Dixon (Montclair, N.J.) scored late in the second half for the match’s lone goal.

“It was a good result,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We got a lot accomplished today against a quality opponent. We were able to play a lot of guys and saw some good things tonight.”

Prior to the match, Virginia raised its 2014 NCAA Championship banner, the Cavaliers’ seventh national championship flag.

Virginia scored in the 83rd minute. Taking a Simeon Okoro (Fr., Weston, Conn.) feed into the box, Dixon sent a shot in that goalkeeper Jackson Morgan knocked down, but Dixon sent the rebound back in to score the goal.

Navy out-shot UVa, 11-8, including 9-3 in the second half. The Midshipmen put seven shots on goal, while UVa recorded four. The Cavaliers held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

UVa entertains Radford at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 18) at Klöckner Stadium and heads to No. 3 Georgetown next Saturday (Aug. 22) to conclude its exhibition schedule. The Cavaliers start the regular season at home on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. against No. 17 Charlotte.
