Olympia Fields, Ill. – Virginia golfers Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) each advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Championship taking place at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Bard, a rising junior, defeated Davis Riley of Hattiesburg, Miss., 4&3 and will face Sepp Straka of Valdosta, Ga., in Thursday’s round of 32. Riley is a freshman at Alabama and Straka is a rising senior at Georgia. It marks the second straight year Bard has advanced to the round of 32 at the tournament.

McCarthy, who graduated from UVa last spring, also won by a 4&3 margin, defeating Jacob Hicks of Mebane, N.C. Hicks is a rising senior at East Carolina.

Last year McCarthy reached the semifinals at the event. This is his seventh U.S. Amateur Championship appearance. He will meet Austin James in the round of 32. James is a sophomore at Charleston Southern.

Both McCarthy and Bard finished tied for 36th in the 36 holes of stroke play, shooting 2-over 142.

Bard is scheduled to tee off at 7:50 a.m. Thursday while McCarthy begins his round at 9:10 a.m. USGA.org will webcast the tournament from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and FoxSports1 will pick up coverage from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday play will also include the round of 16.
