CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team closed out its preseason training camp with a 7-0 victory over Quinnipiac in a scrimmage on Monday (Aug. 24) at Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.

Junior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) gave UVa a 1-0 lead 2:26 into the game when junior Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) found Hyams wide open on the left side of the net. Hyams added a second goal with six minutes left in the first half to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead at the break.

Virginia started the second half with a pair of second-chance goals. Freshman Nikki Freeman (Downington, Pa.) deflected in a missed initial shot after a penalty corner a minute before freshman Greta Ell (Plains, Pa.) corralled a rebound off the goalie pads, passing to junior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) who scored UVa’s fourth goal with 30 minutes left in the game.

Sophomore Emilie van Zinnicq Bergmann (Dordrecht, Netherlands), Foust and Tata each added a goal in the final 20 minutes to give UVa its 7-0 victory.

Cavalier goalies junior Rebecca Holden (Fishing Creek, N.J.) and redshirt freshmen Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) combined for the shut out, each playing one half in goal and making a save apiece.

Virginia’s season-opener is set for Friday, August 28 when UVa hosts Drexel at 6 p.m. at Turf Field. Admission is free for all home scrimmages and regular-season field hockey games.
