Charleston, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team opened the fall portion of its 2015-16 season with a third-place showing at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic. The Cavaliers shot 2-over 290 during Tuesday’s final round for a three-day total of 1-over 865. Arkansas won the event at 7-under 857 while Georgia finished one shot ahead of UVa in the runner-up position.

Senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) posted a final round score of 3-over 75 to lead the team with a seventh-place finish at 1-under 215. It marks the third time during her Virginia career she has finished in the top 10. Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) had an impressive collegiate debut finishing 11th at even par 216. She led UVa during the final round with a 3-under 69.

Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) was 14th at 2-over 218. She shot even par 72 during the final day of competition. Junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) tied for 24th place at 5-over 221. Freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) and sophomore Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.), competing as individual, also tied for 24th place. Freshman Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) was 60th at 12-over 228.

“I felt this was a great start to our season,” said Virginia coach Kim Lewellen. “Elizabeth Szokol and Lauren Diaz-Yi have barely played competitive golf since the NCAA’s last May due to some injuries. For them to shake off the rust and bounce back and perform at that level is impressive. It shows the strength and determination of our upperclassmen. The freshmen all played well and both of our individuals were outstanding. This tournament demonstrated that the team has a lot of depth, which is good for this year and years to come.”

Florida’s Taylor Tomlinson and Clemson’s Alice Hewson shared medalist honors at 6-under 210.

The Cavaliers return to action this weekend when they compete at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 18-20.
