CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 4 Virginia field hockey team (8-2, 2-2 ACC) fell 8-3 to No. 3 North Carolina (10-1, 3-1 ACC) on Friday (Oct. 2) at Turf Field in Charlottesville, N.C.

Virginia trailed 3-1 at half time, but North Carolina netted five goals on 15 shots in the second half to break open the game. UNC held an 8-1 lead when Virginia scored two goals in the final 2:07 of the contest.

“North Carolina definitely brought their A-game, and we didn’t,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “They played a really good game, but it was certainly a tale of two halves. There are definitely some things we need to fix.”

Junior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored twice with junior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) contributing UVA’s second goal. Junior Emily Faught (Newton Square, Pa.) had an assist and also made a defensive save.

North Carolina’s Gab Major, the reigning ACC Player of the Week, scored five goals on seven shots and also had an assist.

The Tar Heel defenders made four defensive saves while starting goalie Shannon Johnson stopped four shots. Virginia’s goalkeeping tandem of junior Rebecca Holden (Fishing Creek, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) combined for eight saves.

Virginia closes out the homestand hosting Richmond on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all regular-season games at Turf Field.
