CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After winning two matches at home, the Virginia volleyball team is back on the road for a four-match swing beginning with North Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. and NC State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Live statistics for the matches will be available and linked through VirginiaSports.com. Friday’s match will be streamed live on ESPN3.
Virginia (11-4, 3-1 ACC) is off to its best start since 2006, when it began 12-3. The Cavaliers were recently ranked No. 34 in the first NCAA RPI ranking released on Monday, the third-highest among ACC teams.
UVA is second in the conference in hitting percentage (.258) and service aces per set (1.71). Senior Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.), who matched the school record with nine aces against Pitt, leads the league and is fifth in the nation with 33 aces on the season.
Freshman Anna Walsh (Grapevine, Texas) earned ACC Freshman of the Week for the third-straight week and fourth overall after averaging 3.67 kills per set and 1.12 blocks per set in last weekend’s wins over Pitt and Virginia Tech.
North Carolina (7-7, 4-1 ACC) has won five of its last six matches, including a 3-0 sweep of NC State on Wednesday night. The Tar Heels lead the league with 3.25 blocks per set as a team. Paige Neuenfeldt and Victoria McPherson are averaging a team-best 2.47 kills per set and McPherson leads the ACC with 1.60 blocks per set.
It will be the 59th meeting all-time between Virginia and North Carolina. The Tar Heels lead the series, 44-14, as the Cavaliers look to end an 11-match skid with their last win coming in 2008.
NC State (12-5, 1-4 ACC) has lost its last two matches, most recently falling to North Carolina, 3-0. Saturday’s match will pit the top serving teams, as the Wolfpack lead the ACC with 1.76 aces per set. Kaitlin Kearney is the team leader with 2.94 kills per set and 1.35 blocks per set.
UVA holds a 37-25 advantage against NC State. The Cavaliers won the most recent meeting, defeating the Wolfpack 3-2 at home last season.
Following this weekend, Virginia will remain on the road as it heads to Boston College on Friday (Oct. 16) and Syracuse on Sunday (Oct. 18).
