Virginia Finishes Ninth at Tar Heel Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The 12th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team finished ninth at the 18-team Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. Virginia shot 7-over 295 on Sunday to finish the 54-hole tournament at 34-over 898. Seventh-ranked Duke took the team title at 3-over 867.

Senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) led UVA with an 18th-place finish, shooting 6-over 222. Szokol had the Cavaliers’ best score on Sunday, shooting 1-over 73. It marked the second time this season Szokol has been UVA’s top finisher at an event. Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) was 29th at 8-over 224. She posted a final round score of 74.

Junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was 39th at 226 after finishing with a final round score of 75. Sophomore Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.) also shot 75 on Sunday and tied for 52nd at 228 along with senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.).

Duke’s Leona Maguire took medalist honors at 4-under 212, bettering Michigan State’s Sarah Burnham by one stroke.

The Cavaliers will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule Oct. 23-25 at The Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
