Head Coach Joanne Boyle
Opening Statement:
“We are very glad to come out of this game with a win. After nine days off, it was nice to get some of the rust off, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Hopefully this is a game to get that out and we’ll get back at it tomorrow and get ready for Ohio State.”

On Defense:
“We always talk about takings things away and I don’t think we did a good job tonight of taking things away. I think they were pretty patient and used more of the clock than normal. I don’t think we were willing to sit down and guard long enough. Moné (Jones) was out for us tonight so we had to go a little bit different with a four-guard lineup, which I think hurt us a little bit. I think we just need more work in closing up our traps and things like that. I think the nine days off got us out of the flow of things, but by the time ACC play comes around we need to be better and on point with our defense.”

On Offense:
“We were moving the ball pretty well against the zone once we figured a few things out. We really did a great job of sharing the ball and got a lead, maybe we were up 30 points, and I think we just started playing sloppy. We were trying to make the home run pass instead of just playing like we had been up to that point offensively. I think we just need to clean that piece up. For me, our defense, rebounding, pressing and closing up traps has to be better.”

On Mikayla Venson
“She got us going because we were a little stagnant in the zone, but she hit a few corner shots in the first half and that loosened things up. We started to relax and I thought we moved the ball better at the end of the third quarter.”

On Ohio State:
“They are more seasoned this year than they were last year. They have a great pace to them. They have two guards who really lead them and score almost half of their points. The ball really revolves around those two. We have to take one out of the mix and just really slow them down. We can’t let them play at the pace they want to. This is why we talk about our defense needing to be on point on Monday night. After Monday’s game we only have two games left before ACC play, so it will be a good challenge for us. They are a great team and on the road in more than likely a hostile environment. This team is more of an ACC pace team and we will definitely be tested.”

Senior Guard Faith Randolph
On the team’s mindset coming back from the exam break:
“We were just excited to get back on the floor after the ten-day break and excited to play an opponent here at JPJ. Coming into the game, we wanted to do the things we’ve been working on these past ten days, which have been defense and getting out and running. We just have to clean up some stuff to get ready for Ohio State.”

On the upcoming game against Ohio State:
“It’s going to be a great atmosphere and a great opportunity for us to come into their place and get a win. They’re a great team, both offensively and defensively. It’ll be a great game.”

On Virginia’s ball movement:
“It felt good to get everyone touching the ball on offense. Everyone was shooting the ball well, so it was a good game for us.”

Sophomore Guard Mikayla Venson
On whether the team was looking ahead at all to Monday’s game at Ohio State:
“We’re just taking it one game at a time. You can never look ahead. You just have to look at the game you’re about to play. Of course [the Ohio State game] is a big game, but we had to take care of business today.”

On improving her jump shot over the break:
“During finals, I was definitely trying to get in the gym a lot more. Not having class frees up a bit up time to do that.”

On the team’s mindset coming back from the exam break:
“We have to be dialed in from the beginning. We can’t have a slow motor. We have to be ready to play. We kind of brought the intensity after we got warmed up, but we can’t do that against Ohio State. We have to come at them from the beginning.”

On Virginia’s ball movement:
“It’s definitely a great feeling getting the ball moving around and not being stagnant. Everybody got into the flow of the game. We have to do that on Monday.”
