LOS ANGELES – Three Virginia men’s tennis players competed in the main draw of the $25,000 USC Los Angeles Pro Futures Tournament, held January 5-10 at the Marks Tennis Stadium.

Because of rain delays in the first two days of the tournament, senior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), a wildcard entry into the main draw, played three matches on Thursday. Shane moved into the quarterfinals of singles after downing seven-seed Deiton Baughman 7-5, 7-5 in the opening round and then following with a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory over Yannick Hanfmann. Shane ended the day by partnering with Alexios Halebian to earn a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Trent Aaron and Andrew Carter in doubles. In Friday morning’s quarterfinal match, Shane fell 6-2, 6-3 to four-seed Philip Bester (current world ranking 303).

Junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) advanced through qualifying to earn one of eight available spots in the singles main draw, but fell 6-4, 6-3 to Jake Devine in the opening round.

Kwiatkowski also competed in doubles with partner senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.), advancing to the quarterfinals via walkover to set up a Friday afternoon match against Shane/Halebian. Kwiatkowski/Styslinger came out on the winning end in the showdown between the Cavaliers, advancing to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory before being edged 3-6, 7-6 (3), 11-9 by Jean-Yves Aubone and Dennis Nevolo in the semis.
