Tallahassee, Fla. – The 19th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team shot 17-over 305 and ended the first day of play at the Florida State Match-Up Tournament in eighth place in the Cavaliers’ first spring tournament. The 12-team field is competing at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla.

Host Florida State grabbed the first-round lead by shooting 5-over 293 on its home course. SMU, South Carolina and Coastal Carolina are tied for second at 9-over 297.

Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) led UVa’s team-scoring players with a round of 1-over 73 to stand in eighth place. Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) is in 26th place at 76 while freshman Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) and senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) are tied for 44th at 78. Sophomore Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.) is 53rd at 79.

UVa has two players competing as individuals who posted rounds of 1-under 71. Those scores were turned in by junior Lauren Diza-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.). They are tied for third on the leaderboard. Texas A&M’s Maddie Szeryk leads the field at 3-under 69.

In addition to traditional collegiate scoring, the tournament features a unique team scoring component. The participating teams are paired in twosomes during the first two rounds and play in threesomes in the final round. The twosomes consist of partners playing together. The match-up portion of the tournament is determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total.

At the end of the tournament, the partners with the lowest score will win the Match-Up championship. The team and individual champions will also be crowned.

The event runs through Sunday.
