Tallahassee, Fla. – The 19th-ranked Virginia women’s golf struggled during the final round of play Sunday at the Florida State Match-Up Tournament and finished in ninth place. UVA shot 18-over 306 during the final round to complete the three-day event at 45-over 909. It was UVA’s first event of the spring. The 12-team field competed at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State rallied Sunday to overtake second-round leader South Carolina and claim the tournament title. The Seminoles shot 3-under 285 during the final round to finish at 7-over 871. South Carolina placed second at 875.

The Hoos opened the tournament by shooting 305 during Friday’s first round, but rebounded with a 298 during the second round to move up to sixth place.

Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) led UVA with an eighth-place finish at 3-over 219. She shot 1-under 71 during Sunday’s final round. It marked the seventh top-10 finish during her career and was her third this season.

Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) was UVA’s next highest finisher, placing 29th. She posted a final-round score of 76 for a 54-hole total of 11-over 227. Classmate Katharine Patrick, playing in her second college tournament, was 36th at 229. She shot 81 on Sunday after posting a career best round of 2-under 70 during the second round.

Senior Elizabeth Szokol was 49th at 235 and sophomore Lyberty Anderson was 57th at 237. UVA junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) competed as an individual and finished 15th at 223. She shot 72 during the final round. Also competing as an individual for UVA was freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.). She placed 23rd at 225.

The Hoos return to action Feb. 21 for the three-day Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans.
