Cavaliers Finish Fifth at Burns Intercollegiate to Open Spring

Kau’i, Hawaii – The 14th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team finished fifth at the 16-team John Burns Intercollegiate in Kaua’i, Hawaii. The Cavaliers shot 5-under 283 during Friday’s final round for a three-day total of 4-over 868. Texas wrestled the team title away from five-time defending champion California. The Longhorns shot 20-under 844 while Cal was second at 849. Texas A&M was third at 863 and Washington was fourth, one stroke ahead of UVA.

Virginia was led by the seventh-place finish of sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.). He finished at 2-under 214 including a final round score of 70. Junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) was 18th at even par 216 as he shot 4-under 68 during the final round. That was UVA’s low single-round score of the tournament.

Freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) was 32nd at 219 while junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) was 44th at 222 and senior Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was 86th at 233.

Texas’ Beau Hossler, teammate Gavin Hall and California’s K.K. Limbhasut all tied for first place at 6-under 210.

UVA resumes its spring schedule March 7-8 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C.
