New Orleans, La. – The 26th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is tied for 14th place after the opening 18 holes of play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, La. The Cavaliers shot 16-over 304 during Sunday’s play at English Turn Golf and Country Club.

Arizona and Oklahoma State share the first-round lead at 1-under 287. Florida and Tulane are one shot behind the co-leaders at even par 288.

UVA was led during the opening round by senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.), who shot 1-over 73. She finished the day in 23rd place. Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) posted a score of 75 and is in 38th position. Freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) is 58th at 77 while classmate Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) is 72nd with a score of 79. Junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) carded a round of 81 and is in 77th place.

Stanford’s Lauren Kim posted the day’s best score, shooting 4-under 68. Five players share second place, one shot behind Kim.

The event runs through Tuesday.
