New Orleans, La. – The 26th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team posted the day’s second best round to make a climb up the leaderboard at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, La. The Cavaliers shot 2-under 286 to climb up from 14th place to settle in a tie for 10th after Monday’s play. UVA had an 18-shot improvement after opening the 16-team tournament with a score of 16-over 304. At 590, Virginia enters the final round just one stroke off of seventh place.

Florida, the only other team to shoot under par on Monday, used a 7-under 281 to climb into first place at 7-under 569. Oklahoma State is in second place at 576 followed by Arizona at 577.

Senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) led UVA’s comeback effort. She finished the day at 3-under 69 that included three birdies to open her round and back-to-back birdies to finish it. She had seven birdies and four bogeys during her round. Szokol moved up to seventh place in the individual standings.

Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) shot 1-over 73 and finished the day in 39th place at 148. Freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) also shot 73 and is 48th at 150. Junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) equaled her low round of the year by shooting 1-under 71 and improved to 56th place at 152. Freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) shot 73 and is tied with Diaz-Yi on the leaderboard.

Stanford’s Lauren Kim continues to hold the individual lead. She shot 2-under 70 and is atop the standings at 6-under 138 through 36 holes.

Tuesday’s final round will feature an 8 a.m. shotgun start. UVA is paired with UCLA and Michigan State during the final day of play.
