Atkinson, Gillen Selected At-Large For NCAA Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Redshirt-sophomore Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) and senior Patrick Gillen (Shelton, Conn.) received at-large bids for the NCAA Championships it was announced by the organization on Tuesday (March 8).

With the selection of Atkinson and Gillen to at-large bids, the Cavaliers will have five wrestlers competing at the NCAA Championships. The event will begin March 17 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Atkinson was selected at 157 pounds, while Gillen was selected at heavyweight.

It’s the second NCAA Championship appearance for Atkinson, while Gillen will be making his first NCAA Championship appearance.

George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio), Nick Herrmann (Amarillo, Texas) and Zach Nye (Enola, Pa.) all received automatic bids by virtue of their finishes at the ACC Championships on Sunday. DiCamillo won the championship at 133 pounds, the third of his career, while Hermann placed third at 125 pounds and Nye finished fourth at 197 pounds.

The Cavaliers will find out the matchups for the opening day of the NCAA Championships when the brackets and seeds are announced at 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday (March 9).
