ATHENS, Ga. – The Cavaliers won the doubles point, but the bottom half of singles went the way of the Bulldogs as No. 10 Virginia (9-5) fell 4-2 at No. 4 Georgia (11-1) on Thursday.

Virginia got out to the early lead, picking up the doubles point with a pair of wins on courts two and three.

The duo of Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) defeated the No. 71 team of Caroline Brinson and Silvia Garcia 6-3 to give the Cavaliers the first win. The team of Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) then defeated the No. 62 team of Patterson and Kennedy Shaffer by a score of 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles, Georgia evened things up with a win on court three as No. 22 Brinson defeated No. 64 Morton in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The Bulldogs then took the lead with a straight-set win on court five as Mariana Gould defeated Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) by a score of 7-5, 6-2.

The rest of the courts all went to three sets with Georgia taking a 3-1 lead as Hannah King defeated Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court six.

Elbaba, ranked No. 13 in singles, gave the Cavaliers a second point when she picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over No. 78 Shaffer on court two.

Georgia closed things out on court four, however, as No. 75 Garcia defeated No. 83 Nauta by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to clinch the match.

Virginia will continue to play on the road this weekend, facing two ACC foes on back-to-back days. The Cavaliers will face No. 42 NC State at 12 p.m. on Saturday before closing the weekend at No. 29 Wake Forest on Sunday at 10 a.m.
