NCAA Tournament Notes

  • With the win, Virginia earned its ninth trip to the Sweet 16 and second under Tony Bennett (2014)
  • Virginia is 27-19 all-time in 20 NCAA Tournament appearances
  • Tony Bennett is 8-5 career in five trips to the NCAA Tournament (2008 at Washington State, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 at Virginia)
  • With 54 points in the second half, UVA scored its most points in a half in a tournament game since recording 65 against Nicholls State on March 16, 1995. It was UVA’s highest scoring half of the season (53 in second half vs. Villanova)
  • UVA shot 73.1 percent in the second half, the second-best FG percentage in a half in program tournament history (73.3 percent, 11-of-15, in second half against NC State on March 26, 1983)

  • Anthony Gill moved into 36th place on the all-time UVA scoring list with his 19-point performance. He passed Joe Noertker (1947-50, 1,177 points)
  • Gill has scored 19 points in each of UVA’s 2016 tournament games
  • Marial Shayok scored 12 points, his most points since a career-high 17 against Long Beach State on Nov. 20
  • Shayok reached double figures for the seventh time this season and the third time in the last four games.
